I came across reference to this article by Chris Anderson in the OCLC Newsletter. It outlines a new(ish) economic theory called The Long Tail which has the potential to change (well, really, HAS changed) the music/book/film industries in terms of sales and the perception of what consumers are interested in purchasing. The little description at the top of the article reads: Forget squeezing millions from a few megahits at the top of the charts. The future of entertainment is in the millions of niche markets at the shallow end of the bitstream.
