Laboring on Labor Day

Here I am, once again, at work on Labor Day. Ta-da! The wonders of working at this fine institution. My walk to work was immensely pleasant since there were no cars on the road -- quiet and peaceful and amazingly cool for a day that will be 94 degrees at its best. Today also commemorates the start of my 9th year working here. (!!!) Never thought it would be that long.

Penny had her x-ray on Friday and it showed no signs of a mass in her chest, so the surgery is a go as long as the surgeons in Louisville a) feel it's doable and b) give us an estimate close to the preliminary ones they quoted a few weeks ago.

Saturday was a good day. Neil ran eight miles and I got up early and finished Liza's last pillow. I'm pleased with the way this last one came out - more pleased than I am with the first two, but they all look good and will be lovely...I hope. Because we got up so early, we had some time to relax before doing all our errands. We finished watching the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Saturday night so we could return it to the library. Gotta get the next set!

Sunday started out pretty good, but it deteriorated after lunch. Life is just gettin' us down. Things got better when Z called in the evening, though. We miss our friends. As the last child says in the Pied Piper: "It's dull in our town since our playmates left!" We both already miss the sense of community that being in T&S fostered. Neil's identity is so tied to T&S that he's feeling a little bit lost in the "who am I" department. Soon the money will be tight, the social situation different, and everything will be changed...and yet we'll still be in the same place. It's weird. Tomorrow is Neil's last day. It can't come soon enough, really -- drop the baggage, re-pack, move on. It's so bittersweet.

Anyhow, here's hoping today is better! So far it's ok. I discovered that you can order really cheap checks at Walmart. Huzzah!
