Oh, German, why do you torture me so?!

I took two semesters of German in college. Two. Those classes met five days a week. Granted, my two semesters were separated by a year and a half and that second semester was pretty miserable because I felt constantly behind. Not to mention that the teacher was evil...at least he was to me in class. I always felt picked on.

Now I find myself having to re-learn German for a reading proficiency exam, and I am realizing that I remember a lot of basics (and vocabulary) from the first semester, but very VERY little from that second one, and even less when it comes to details of case and adjective endings. Drat.

I am kicking myself for not auditing German at UE when I could...for free. But taking the class is really not very fun. They make you attempt to speak the language...in front of other people. I could have used a class for reading German. They have one here, but I'm not about to pay for it or let it eat up precious time in my already long graduate career.

I guess I should count my blessings. Some folks in the program here have not taken German at all. At least I sort of remember something about some of it from when I took the classes over ten years ago. Egad.
