The biopsy results came back last Monday. They were not good, but no surprise. The tumor is a fibrosarcoma with a fair to guarded prognosis. Treatment options are radiation and surgery (sporting a $5000 or more price tag), just surgery ($2500 at least), or doing nothing but controlling pain and keeping a close eye on her quality of life.
Twelve days after the biopsy, the tumor is already ulcerating. It is devastating.
Neil made an appointment with an oncologist on Wednesday -- they may be able to tell us more about the nature of her tumor and the course of the disease. They might want to do an ultrasound to better see what might be affected inside and whether her belly tissue on that side has been infiltrated. We'll see.
One step at a time. More information is good.
I can imagine that we will end up doing nothing and letting her die naturally, gracefully, and with dignity rather than slicing her open with guarded results. But it is difficult to make that decision nonetheless.
She is such a fantastic kitty. This whole thing is heartbreaking.
Do you think they want something?
